What's the move-in checklist nobody mentions?
You changed your address on Amazon. You forwarded your mail. You updated your license. And then three months later, you discover you forgot to register your car, transfer your voter registration, enroll your kid in the right school zone, or sign up for a trash pickup schedule that does not match your old town.
This is the checklist. The one for Manalapan specifically, not a generic NJ template.
Week 1: The utilities you cannot skip
- Electric: JCP&L (Jersey Central Power & Light) serves most of Manalapan. Call 800-662-3115 or set up service at firstenergycorp.com. Do this before closing if possible—same-day transfer is common for new homeowners.
- Gas: New Jersey Resources (NJR) or PSE&G depending on your street. Check which provider serves your address at njenergysavers.com or call your realtor.
- Water: Manalapan Township Water or a private well depending on location. Township water: 732-446-8350 ext. 8. Well owners: have it tested within 30 days of move-in.
- Trash: Manalapan Township Public Works manages curbside collection. Collection days vary by neighborhood. Call the township or visit manalapan.org for your zone’s schedule.
- Internet: Optimum and Xfinity are the main providers in Manalapan. Run the address check at both before signing—coverage varies by street. Verizon Fios is available in parts of the township.
Month 1: The things people forget
- NJ MVC address change: Required within 60 days of move. Do it at njmvc.gov (online) or at the Freehold MVC Agency (hours vary—book an appointment). Your license, registration, and title all need updating.
- Voter registration: Register or update at vote.nj.gov. Deadline is 21 days before any election. Do not wait.
- School enrollment: Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District covers K–8. Manalapan High School (grades 9–12) is part of a regional district. Bring proof of residency, immunization records, and prior school transcripts. Call the district office at 732-786-2000.
- Township property tax portal: Set up online access at manalapan.org for property tax notices and to verify your payment schedule.
- Homeowner’s insurance update: Your policy must reflect the new address. Call your agent within the first week.
The ones nobody mentions
- Monmouth County Library System card: Free. Works at every branch in the county. Register online or in person at any branch. You get access to ebooks, audiobooks, streaming, and digital newspapers.
- Manalapan Recreation registration: Youth sports, adult programs, and summer camp registration opens early—often January for summer. If you move in spring, you may miss registration windows for the season. Call 732-446-8350 and ask what is still available.
- Emergency alert registration: Sign up for Monmouth County’s emergency notification system at visitmonmouth.com/alerts. Includes severe weather, road closures, and evacuation notices.
- Recycling calendar: Manalapan recycles on alternating weeks. The schedule is different from your prior town and different by neighborhood. Get the calendar from the township website before your first missed pickup.
The most commonly missed item: NJ MVC. New residents routinely wait three months, then discover they owe late fees or have a compliance issue on their registration. Do it in week one. It takes 15 minutes online.
