What's worth the drive in Central NJ?
Living in Central NJ means being an hour from almost everything and driving to most of it without thinking twice. Here is the curated list—the 30-to-60-minute trips that Manalapan families actually make, sorted by what makes each worth it.
Under 30 minutes: These should be regulars
Asbury Park. The beach in summer, the restaurant scene year-round. The Asbury Hotel has a rooftop bar worth visiting in warm months. The boardwalk walk is free. Parking is manageable before 11 AM or after 7 PM.
Red Bank. The best downtown in Monmouth County for a night out. Count Basin Park on a weekend morning is one of the better free experiences in Central NJ. The Broad Street retail district has survived the years better than most NJ downtowns.
Allaire State Park. Twenty-five minutes. Free entry. Excellent trail system, a restored historic village, and one of the better mountain bike trail networks in the state. Worth a Saturday morning any month that it is not actively raining.
30–45 minutes: The committed trip
- Sandy Hook: The best beach in NJ that does not require a two-hour drive. Gunnison Beach is clothing-optional (know before you go). Spermaceti Cove and the lighthouse area are excellent for families. Parking fills by 10 AM on summer Saturdays—arrive by 9 or take the ferry from Atlantic Highlands.
- Lambertville: The best antiquing town in NJ. Cross the bridge to New Hope, Pennsylvania for lunch. The drive up Route 29 along the Delaware River is genuinely beautiful in fall.
- Princeton: The university campus is free to walk. The restaurant scene on Nassau Street is better than its reputation. The Princeton Art Museum is free and excellent. Good option when you want culture without the city.
45–60 minutes: Worth planning around
- Liberty Science Center (Jersey City): Best science museum in NJ for kids. The IMAX theater is the largest in the state. Budget three hours minimum. Combine with a walk along the Liberty State Park waterfront for Manhattan views that cost nothing.
- Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton): Forty-two acres of outdoor sculpture on the grounds of a former fairgrounds. More interesting than it sounds. Worth a spring or fall afternoon for adults; older kids appreciate it too.
- Cape May: An hour and fifteen minutes, but it earns the drive. The Victorian architecture, the ferry to Delaware, the birding in spring and fall. Plan for a full day and stay for dinner.
The mistake most people make: treating NJ drives as something to avoid. The state is dense with good things that are genuinely close. The hour you spend in traffic to get to Manhattan is the hour you could spend at Sandy Hook.
